68 VW Beetle Baja Fresh Build - $10000 (Tucson)
1968 VW Beetle Baja Original miles of 16,363 box A - not a typo
Story here if you want to read, but please read it all if you are interested in this Baja. This was a build my son wanted to do but lost interest in. He is now venturing off and defending our country in the Navy. The build started with buying the shell (and some of the retro parts) of my Dad's (2nd owner) Baja that had been sitting for around 30 + years, that I was a passenger in many times as a kid. We took it down to my father in laws that has a shop and paint booth and stripped it down to bare metal and fixed two small dents and shaved the fuel door, antenna, mirrors and holes from the stainless trim. Also welded in reinforcement plates in the rear panels to beef up the area that the running boards bolt to behind the door. He had a spare set of fiberglass body parts he had purchased that was much thicker than what was on the car so we prepped those for paint as well. The main paint color is from the new 4 door jeeps. The build was slow as my son didn't show much interest in working on it. I have finished to this point in the last few months because I want it out of my garage so I can start my 65 C10 build. There isn't much left to do. Most of the aftermarket parts on this are NOS items you can no longer find and are from the 70-80's. This is a truly retro build as far as aftermarket accessories goes. Has been sitting indoors for over 30 years until this recent rebuild and is kept in a garage with A/C and Heat. You will never find another one like it. If I didn't want it out of my garage I would list it higher and wait.
What it needs:
All fluids added
Alignment
Seats bolted in
Rear turn signals installed or 3-2 wire converter installed and use brake lights as blinkers, I have the turn signal lights I just couldn't decide where I wanted to mount them.
Two oil lines to filter and cooler + cooler mounted
Rear seat was not a plan but I planned on a cargo area, I may finish that. I have the material that matches the rear panel.
Bracket for hood latched finished and bolted in
I started a center console (that isn't bolted in) and it will go with the car or a aftermarket one can be purchased and bolted in
Skid plate installed
A driver that is looking for attention!!
Not needed but recommended:
I would undercoat the fenders
Carpet and seal up under the hood better
What's been done besides described above (everything is new):

NOS VW gauge with 0 miles

Fat Mat sound deadener plus insulation throughout the interior
Upgraded a bunch of wiring and installed 4 relays to handle the gauges, fog lights and the fuel pump
New fuse panel
New glove box
And tons more. This was not built to be a trailer queen show car. Don't come looking to point out every imperfection, it isn't perfect but is a very nice car and could win some shows I'm sure. We didn't get around to cutting and polishing either, paint looks good but still can be done. It's not perfect. It's built to drive and not flying off jumps in the Baja 500 either. I have many boxes of extra parts that come with the car as well, many could be sold for some value. Car comes with a clean signed title, lots of books, tow bar, receipts and a set of keys. I keyed the original ignition to the NOS door handles as well. Rear of the Baja sits 15" off the ground and the front is an inch lower. I may do some of the items listed above to keep going on it but I'm afraid if I finish it that I will end up keeping it and I don't have the room. It's sweet as hell.
Willing to trade plus cash on your end for a decent car I can send to my son in Florida. No junk. Will accept offers but be reasonable, no way you could come close to building this car in parts alone at this price. No joy rides. Everything that's done is in working order and done well. Lots of hours and long nights in this build. If I do happen to keep working on this car and finish it I will be listing in in the $15-17K range most likely. Save some cash and do just a small bit of work yourself.
